The PACISE Executive Board met at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport Pennsylvania on January 26th, 1995. Richard Smaby, President, convened the Board at 5:20 pm.
Present: Thomas Cunningham [Indiana], Nicholas Ford [California], David Hutchens [Millersville], Phillip Pfeiffer [East Stroudsburg], Richard Smaby [Clarion], Joseph Thomas [Kutztown], Deborah Whitfield [Slippery Rock], Erik Wynters [Bloomsburg].
The minutes of the Executive Board meeting of August 24, 1995 were approved with minor corrections.
A treasurer's report showing a balance of $1,340.69 was accepted. Invoices for 1996-97 dues were passed out.
The Spring 1996 Conference will be held at California on March 29th and 30th in conjunction with SSHE-MA. The meeting will include one common speaker from the Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center and two separate speakers for each of the two groups. Meals will be held together, but meetings and registration will be handled separately. Friday activities will be held at the Holiday Inn, Union Town, Saturday events will be held at the University. Paper contributions will be requested and a Web site for conference information will be created. Joe Thomas suggested that the board set a programming language for future PACISE programming contests. The issue was tabled. A panel session organized by the executive board to discuss service activities for PACISE is to be added to the agenda at the conference.
Discussion ensued as to whether it is reasonable to hold Fall Conferences in the future. Various modifications were discussed including the possibility of expanding one conference [depth , maybe length, publish abstracts] and not holding a second one per year. Also, job fairs could be added, connections to industry could be made for the students, and alumni could be involved. It was suggested that an invitation for any school to hold the fall conference be made. A move to not host Fall 96 conference was passed:6 for, 1 against, 1 abstained.
The WWW site for PACISE will soon be up. In the meantime, all executive board members will be added to the listserv group.
Shippensburg has offered to host the Spring 1997 conference. Some of the suggestions to modify the conference may be incorporated then.
Expanding services and functions of PACISE was discussed. Funding from state-wide professional development board to finance speakers for conferences was suggested [a faculty professional development committee[FPDC] grant was used at the East Stroudsburg conference]. Expanding the membership to others such as academic support individuals, and CS faculty from non-SSHE institutions would increase the participation in the organization.
The slate of officers for 1996-1997: President: Richard Smaby, Vice President: Ellen Zimmer, Secretary: Deborah Whitfield, and Treasurer: Joe Thomas was passed.
A discussion of future second conferences was tabled.
The next executive board meeting is scheduled for March 29th 5:00 pm. at the California conference [the location will be announced at a future time]. The executive board will also meet during breakfast.
Executive Board adjourned at 7:00 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Deborah L. Whitfield
