The PACISE Executive Board met at Milesburg, PA on September 15, 2000. President David Hutchens, president convened the meeting at 4:05.
Present: Bloomsburg - Bob Montante; Edinboro - Joseph Molnar; Indiana - Thomas Cunningham; Kutztown - Oskars Rieksts; Mansfield - Mary Robinson-Slabey; Millersville - David Hutchens; Shippensburg - Joseph Thomas; Slippery Rock - Beverly Gocal
There was a consensus to continue executive board meetings at 4:00 on the third Friday in September and in January.
There were no available minutes of the April 7/8, 2000 meeting at IUP. Beverly Gocal will check with Deborah Whitfield about obtaining these minutes.
The treasurer's report showing a balance of $4,132.94 was accepted.
Joe Molnar reported on plans for the spring 2002 conference at Edinboro. The choosen topic is Information Technology: What is IT? Discussion led to an agreement that IT is a very broad area which might include topics such as Internet programming, web development, e-business, security issues, network administration, audiovisual, librarianship, including how this fits into the CS and IS disciplines. A suggestion was made and supported to invite faculty from Business departments to the conference.
Edinboro should elicit help from other institutions to obtain problems and judges for the programming contest. Other suggestions for Edinboro were to invite undergraduate and graduate students and their advisors to present papers; have students bring their resumes to the conference; have Friday afternoon sessions of interest to students; invite alumni to submit proposals for talks.
A motion was made to invite non-SHEE schools to the conference, with full participation, that is, they would be invited to present papers, bring a programming team, and pay the same registration price as regular members. Motion passed.
A motion was made to cover the registration fee for up to two alumni who do a presentation at any future conference. Alumni will submit proposals to the hosting school and the program committee has the final decision on selection of papers. Motion passed.
Location of future conferences: SlipperyRock (2002), _______ 2003; California (2004), Bloomsburg (2005). A host is still needed for 2003 (hopefully from among Cheyney, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield )
A lengthy discussion was held of the recommendation to open membership in PACISE to non-SSHE schools. No action taken.
No information was available on whether anyone was pursuing the idea of having a PACISE journal. No action taken.
Joe Thomas reported that the workshop planned for last summer was cancelled for lack of participants. He wondered whether the effort to plan such workshops was worth it. A consensus was that summer workshops be suspended.
No action was taken on reviewing the bylaws.
A discussion followed on what, if anything, PACISE should do, other than hold the spring conferences. One thought was that something be done to promote Computer Science in Harrisburg. A suggestion was made to try to get someone from the Chancellor's office to attend conferences to give a talk and answer questions.
The next executive board meeting will be held at 4:00 on the third Friday in January 2001.
Adjourned: 7:05
