KOLACHE  (Marge Yanno)

 

3 dry yeast with 1/2 cup water

1 1/2 cups milk

8 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1/2 tea. salt

1/2 lb. butter, melted

4 eggs

 

     Sift flour, salt and sugar.  Beat eggs and pour in melted butter.  Add to flour mixture.

     Warm water and let yeast melt in it.  Warm milk and add with other ingredients and knead until smooth.  Place in refrigerator over night.  In morning cut into 8 portions (do not knead) work with one portion at a time.  Return remaining dough to refrigerator.

 

NUT FILLING (about 5 pounds nuts)

 

     For every pound of nuts use 1 stick oleo, browned good; 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tea. vanilla.  Use 1 or 2 beaten egg whites for every 3 pounds of nuts so the filling will be moist enough to spread.

     Beat egg yolks with 2 tab. water to put on top of crust.  Bake 350' for 35 min.

 

NOTE: Raisins, poppy seeds (with graham cracker crumbs) or chocolate chips can be substituted for nuts.
